Hash Generator (MD5/SHA)

Enterprise safe

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 digests from text or files — entirely in-browser.

Frequently asked questions

Which hash algorithms are supported?

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 — all computed and shown side by side from the same input. SHA-1/256/384/512 use the browser's built-in Web Crypto API; MD5 uses a small pure-JS library since Web Crypto has no MD5 support.

Should I use MD5 or SHA-1 for security?

No — both are cryptographically broken and unsuitable for passwords, signatures, or anything security-sensitive. They're offered here for checksums and compatibility with legacy systems that still expect them; use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for anything that matters.

Can I hash a file instead of text?

Yes — switch to file mode and the file is hashed in a Web Worker so a large file (checked in 1 MB slices for MD5) doesn't freeze the tab. The file is read locally and never uploaded.

Is hashing streamed for very large files?

Only the MD5 path is truly incremental. The SHA algorithms go through crypto.subtle.digest(), which needs the complete file in memory — it isn't a streaming API, so extremely large files are read in full before hashing.

About this tool

Compare common digest algorithms for text or files, whether you need a compatibility checksum or a modern integrity value.

Workflow

  1. Choose text or file mode and provide the value to hash.
  2. Select the algorithms required by the system you are checking.
  3. Compare the output with the trusted digest using the same input bytes.
  4. Use a modern, fit-for-purpose algorithm when you control the protocol.

Things to know

  • MD5 and SHA-1 are retained for legacy compatibility and are not suitable for security decisions.
  • A digest verifies matching input; it does not encrypt or hide the original data.
  • Very large SHA files need to fit in memory because the browser digest API is not streaming.
